Story Class of 91 9-07-2011
The RHS Class of '91 20-year Reunion
1991 started on a Tuesday, and is generally considered to be the final year of the Cold War. It is also the year the Gulf War started. Globally speaking it was a year of upheaval, with airline crashes, The Visegrad Agreement, explosions at both Paddington station and Victoria station in London, coup d'états, the forming of the UNPO in The Hague, the Galileo spacecraft became the first probe to visit an asteroid, a cyclone that killed 200,000, blue roses were produced through genetic engineering, the Dead Sea Scrolls were unveiled in Israel, the Internet was made available for unrestricted commercial use, Rodney King asked us all to get along, the first version of Linux was released, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested, Joseph Harris went postal, and, so many other events charged and changed the world in ways both positive and fear-inspiring.
Calum Worthy, Erin Sanders, and Emma Roberts were among the celebrities born, while Red Grange,Michael Landon, Freddie Mercury, Gene Rodenberry, Redd Foxx and Danny Thomas passed along their way, taking a little of the sheen of the youth of this generation with them to their grave.
The cost of living in 1991 was dear, with a yearly inflation rate of 4.25% and the average cost of a new house steadying at $120,000.00.
Popular films included Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Silence of the Lambs, Beauty and the Beast, and Thelma and Louise. Michael Jackson was still the Prince of Pop, his sister Janet was the Queen, Guns 'N' Roses ran riot, Nirvana was blissful to the ear, The Clash and Metallica made quite the din, and Boys turned in II Men.
It was a year of change, everywhere but television, where almost all the popular shows had started long before and finished long after 1991: X-Files, Will and Grace, Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Ally McBeal, That 70's Show.
Yep! The people who lived through that year, who took their first tender steps out of the school system and into the world of adulthood, deserve a party! Fortunately for them, they are about to get one. The classes of '89, '90, '92 and '93 have been invited to join in, and, of course, the teachers, K-12, who helped shape the children they were and the adults they have become are welcome, as well.
