Tucson / NYC and back 9-24-2008
Those little town blues are slowly melting away …. in the Arizona heat.
Join Artists David Elliott, Catherine Eyde, Valerie Galloway, and Patricia Katchur at the Adobe Gallery, The Triangle L Ranch in Oracle, from October 4 – November 29 for the Tucson/NYC and back Exhibit. But, what, you may ask, does it mean? Go ahead, ask! There are answers.
You see, these four artists all transplanted themselves to New York City, for reasons beyond mortal ken (or at least much Arizonian ken), and then had the good, common sense to transplant themselves right back again. Not that you need tell the New Yorkers that.
This aptly named fete is, thusly, an exhibition of photographs and paintings which were inspired by, and created in, both locales. Valerie Galloway’s coffee-stained photos explore urban moments, each telling its own short story. From castle-like water towers to flying bicycles, each image conveys a feeling of surprise, magic and urban energy.
Patricia Katchur’s quiet but quirky photographs capture the many moods of NYC and Tucson. Explorations in fleeting glimpses, ala Patricia’s vision, reinterpret life’s little forget-me-not random moments into strange, curious worlds laced with nostalgia; oft times bittersweet.
Less bitter, more sweet, David Elliott’s work explores the emotional relationship we have for, and with, iconic American food products; in this case, classic cereal brands. The extreme detail of these large scale prints creates a delicious mixture of nostalgia and new found wonder, as these ultra-familiar objects are recast as sculptural born color, whimsy and sugar. Nicely, you’ll only need to purchase two sculptures, which are part of a balanced breakfast, to equal the nutritional value in one bowl of Total.
New York City afforded Catherine Eyde the multicultural experience she long sought. The ordinary, such as a walk to the subway, became extraordinary as the world around her breathed new sounds and shapes. Catherine’s NYC paintings are greatly inspired by the crowded buildings and the grand scale of diverse people living closely together. Upon returning to Tucson, Catherine’s artwork reflected the emotions she was beginning to experience as her baby grew inside her. Motherhood and the amazement of her daughter continue to inspire the current direction of her work.
The Opening Reception for this Exhibition is on Sunday, October 12, from 2-4 pm. All are welcome
