From this to this: Girl Scouts

It started out as this message to me from my boss:
Can you do a little story with this info? Doesn’t have to be long, but something that will catch the eye.

Girl Scouts: More than just selling cookies!
Girl Scout cookies are some of the most wonderful cookies around … on earth .. in fact, they are some of the most wonderful things on earth, period. Sure, they don’t take as long to make as Mt. Rushmore did, but, they also don’t cost as much to visit. They are not as enduring as the great pyramids of Egypt, but, they are closer to home and taste better when you bite into them.
Most of us are used to the idea, whether it’s happened to us personally or not, of a little Girl Scout at the door, selling boxes of cookies that are simultaneously a dream come true, and the absolute kryptonite of the super will powers that must be summoned up for dieting. But, how many of us think past the price, which is kind of enormous, and the taste, which makes them worth the price, to ask why is this girl out in the heat – whether at our door or at a table down by Gordon’s Market, for instance – hawking cookies? Who are these Girl Scouts, and what’s so important as to go to all that trouble?
According to the Girl Scouts of USA, on their website under the helpful link labeled “Who We Are’, that leads tohttp://www.girlscouts.org/who_we_are/, it says that Girl Scouts of USA is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls – all girls- where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
In other places on the site, you can learn about the history of Girl Scouts of the USA , which was chartered by the United States Congress in 1950. Through membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, GSUSA is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults in 145 countries. While learning about the history, one learns more about what those girls are doing, that they need to sell so many cookies for.
Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid.
Well! A non-profit organization that wants to help your daughters to be well-rounded, happy, successful people? Where they’ll have fun, make friends, learn survival skills, and to think of their bodies as something other than places to drape clothes and jewelry? You don’t want them involved in that sort of goings on, now, do you?
If you do, be advised that the Girl Scouts of Arizona Cactus-Pine Council is offering an event for girls in grades K-6th, to be held at the upstairs of the Pregnancy Care Center, 508 N. Thorne Ave.
