Lions & Volunteers
There is a fairly obscure cartoon that I think of, often, from week to week, as I am typing up the missives of Don E. Wright. It is called ‘Lambert the Sheepish Lion’ and used to be shown, where I come from, on NBC, every few years, when it was autumn and everyone was a bit worried about surviving the winter. I believe it was to help the local charities drum up support for their various causes.
There is something about the show that makes one feel ever so charitable.
It is not the theme song, which goes something like “Lambert, the Sheepish Lion Lambert, there’s no denying, he’s a wild and wooly sheep Lambert, the Sheepish Lion” Though, some purists remember a time when he was Lambert the Friendly Lion, instead. Still, I am not writing this to debate the changing of movies or theme songs of same, as we progress through the ages, so we will let that rest – sort of.
Now, why would that cartoon remind me of Donald E. Wright, you ask? It is because, I am a purist, and I remember it as ‘Lambert, the Friendly Lion’ and a song in the show which said something about “Lambert, he just kept on trying.” and that, dear reader, is Donald E. Wright in a nutshell, as the spokesperson for the local Lions Club, who all keep themselves so busy that I almost always have something to type up in regards to their activities, every single week, and sometimes I have more than one thing, in different areas of the newspaper.
Your local Lions are busy, selfless in their dedication to their causes, hard working people who are constantly throwing benefits, fund raisers, volunteering to help others; and, they make a mighty mean pancake, too. I hope you’ve been paying attention and getting out to their various events, as they are planned to be fun, a good value for the fun you receive for the price you pay or the donation you make, and the money goes right back into the community, making it a better, brighter place for everyone.
Recently, it was announced that the Lions were having their 48th Annual Quail Hunters Breakfast on October 1st – 3rd. “Went real good in our new location by Oracle Ford-Mercury. Everyone was praising Oracle Ford and Mark Phelps’ family for supporting the Lions Club by allowing us to put on the 48th Quail Hunters Breakfast. Everyone loved the location, said we should have it here again.” said Don E. Wright. He went on to say “They came down pretty hard on the state because of their greed, by raising our permit fee to $300.00 to a non profit organization.”
In attendance, to name a few, were the District Governor, Carl Johannesen with his wife Tia; First Vice District Governor Chip Kline and his wife, Annie; the VDG, who flipped a few pancakes; and, Lion Don and Barbara Daily with their dog, Rositala Daily.
The winners in the drawing, were Colin Reid, of San Manuel – $200; Barbara Ragels, of Oracle – $100; Araceli Bonner, of San Manuel- Dub’s Plumbing & Supply gift certificate; Eleazar Luna, of Oracle – Screw Driver Set Donated by Carquest; a $30.00 gift certificate from Wal-Mart was won by Troy of Carquest;a $25.00 gift certificate from Jazz-it-Up in San Manuel went to Kathleen Hanna, of Oracle; Bobby Castillo won a $20.00 gift certificate from Casa Rivera in Oracle and its twin was won by Sandra Morris; dinner for two from La Casita in San Manuel was won by Nick Dominquez, of Oracle; $20.00 gift certificate from Romo’s in San Manuel went to Rebecca Davis of Oracle; Romo’s also donated a $15.00 gift certificate which was won by Raymond Sanchez, of Oracle. Congratulations to all the Winners.
“Thanks to all the Lions and Volunteers that worked so hard & donated to put in on. Also, thanks to Oracle Ford Mercury, Dub’s Plumbing & Supply, IGA in San Manuel, and Oracle Market, and Dollar Stores”, says Donald E, Wright
